After completing her education, Kirkwood joined the BBC’s secretarial reserve in London. She later presented short segments on BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio 2, and BBC Radio 4 after several internal transfers. Follow ing her marriage to Jimmy Kirkwood, she temporarily left the BBC and worked in recruitment and as a training consultant for a management consultancy in Cheshire. In 1992, she spent time on the now-defunct cable TV channel Windsor TV, later known as Wire TV, alongside Sacha Baron Cohen.

Carol Kirkwood returned to the BBC at Elstree Studios training department in 1993 as a freelance presenter. During this period, she also presented the bi-monthly program Talking Issues for HTV West. In 2011, Kirkwood co-presented the BBC One series The Great British Weather and provided weather updates on BBC Radio 2’s The Chris Evans Breakfast Show.

Kirkwood has made appearances on CBBC’s Hacker Time and the BBC One panel show Would I Lie to You? In October 2018, she had a cameo appearance on Hollyoaks.

In August 2015, it was announced that Kirkwood would participate in the thirteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing, partnering with professional dancer Pasha Kovalev. The competition began in September 2015, and she finished in 10th place.
