Mendoza spent thirteen seasons as a Minor League Baseball player. Before joining the Charleston RiverDogs in 2010, he was a part of the coaching staff of the Staten Island Yankees when he entered the Yankees Minor League organization in 2009.
He was manager of the Gulf Coast League Yankees for the 2011 season. After that, he went back to work as the RiverDogs’ manager prior to the 2012 campaign.
After the 2012 season, he was hired by the Yankees as a traveling defensive coach. Mendoza was elevated to the major league coaching staff of the Yankees as an infield coach following the 2017 season.
Mendoza succeeded Josh Bard as the Yankees’ bench coach on November 11, 2019. Second base umpire Bill Miller ejected Mendoza on June 6, 2021, marking the first time in his MLB career.
