Whenever you bring a new monitor to your computer, or if your old monitor has a color disorder, the first thing you do is look for your monitor’s hardware color controls to toggle the display settings accordingly.
Most of us inadvertently perform color correction through trial and error. They set the contrast and then set the Gamma, then again found that the contrast needed to be adjusted a bit and in the midst of all that confusion, the brightness was ignored. So basically, most computer users tend to fix their screen color manually and that’s okay, however, there is a better way.
If you are a Windows 7 user, you can use the Calibrate Windows tool to configure these settings step by step and get the best display on your new or old monitor. Let’s check the steps.
Step 1: To open the Color Calibration tool for Windows, click the Start menu and type Calibrate in the Search box. Click on Calibrate display color to open the tool. You can also navigate to Control Panel—> Display -> Color Calibration to launch the same.
While the Windows color calibration wizard itself is self-explanatory, here is a step-by-step guide to achieving the best display on your monitor.
Step 2: The first window in the wizard is an introductory window that tells you all about the calibration tool. If you are working on a laptop, make sure you are does not work in power saver method. Also, make sure apps like F.lux, which optimizes window display to suit your eyes, aren’t running in the background. When you’re ready, click Next.
Step 3: The next window asks you to restore the display settings to default. It’s not necessary in my opinion but you can try if you want.
Step 4: The next screen determines what Gamma is and what kind of Gamma correction is best to see.
Step 5: The following screen gives you control over the Gamma setting so you can change it to suit your needs.
Step 6: The next screen asks if you want to calibrate the brightness and contrast of your display. Now, if you are using a desktop computer that has these types of controls in the form of hardware buttons, you can continue. If you are working on a laptop, I don’t think there is any such control and therefore you can skip these steps.
Step 7: If you continue, the wizard will tell you what a dimmer is and how to do it. The next screen gives you a magnified image so you can use your display controls to best configure it. Click Next when done.
Step 8: Now the wizard will tell you what the contrast is and how you can adjust it using the hardware buttons on your monitor.
Step 9: Finally adjust the color balance and click Next.
Step 10: When the color calibration is complete, the wizard will ask you to confirm, whether you like the current calibration or you want to revert to the previous settings.
Step 11: You can now complete the wizard or start the Text Editor to get crisp and clear text on your screen.
Conclusion
In my opinion, the laptop almost does not need color calibration at all, but if you use an LCD, TFT or LED screen, you must use it. It not only optimizes the display, but also helps your eyes work longer without fatigue.
