He was born on January 10, 1996, and grew up in Bellevue, Washington, where he attended Bellevue High School. While in high school, he played both safety and running back positions and was also a track athlete.
Baker was named the Seattle Times High School Athlete of the Year during his senior year. As a highly-rated four-star recruit, Baker committed to play college football at the University of Oregon before ultimately flipping to the University of Washington the night before National Signing Day.
Baker’s impressive performances in college led to his selection by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. At the NFL Combine, Baker completed all of the combine and positional drills and performed similarly well during Washington’s Pro Day. Despite concerns about his size, many NFL experts predicted that Baker would be a second round pick. Ultimately, he was drafted by the Cardinals with the 36th overall pick, following a trade with the Chicago Bears.
The Cardinals signed Baker to a four-year, $6.83 million contract with a signing bonus of $3.10 million in May 2017. Due to NFL rules, Baker was unable to attend OTA’s or minicamp until the University of Washington’s graduation day.
However, he impressed coaches throughout training camp and was named the backup free safety to Tyrann Mathieu to begin the regular season. Baker’s professional debut was in the Cardinals’ season-opener at the Detroit Lions. Throughout his rookie season, Baker made seven starts, 74 combined tackles, and seven pass deflections in 16 games.
The following year, Baker was named the starting strong safety, alongside free safety Antoine Bethea, under the Cardinals’ new head coach, Steve Wilks. He finished the season second on the team with 102 tackles through 14 games and 13 starts.
In 2020, Baker signed a four-year, $59 million extension with the Cardinals, which made him the highest-paid safety in NFL history at the time. During that season, he continued to showcase his impressive skills, recording a team high 15 tackles in the season-opener against the San Francisco 49ers and forcing a fumble on running back Ezekiel Elliott during Monday Night Football in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys.
