Ross came across the television program The Magic of Oil Painting, hosted by German painter Bill Alexander, while working as a part-time bartender.: 17-18 Alexander used a 16th-century painting technique known as alla prima, or “wet-on-wet,” which allowed him to complete a painting in thirty minutes.
Following his study and mastery of the technique, Ross started painting Alaskan landscapes on novelty gold-mining pans, which he subsequently successfully sold.
Ross’s sales revenue eventually outpaced his military pay. As a master sergeant, he left the Air Force in 1981.
He traveled as a salesman and instructor for Alexander’s “Alexander Magic Art Supplies Company” after returning to Florida, where he studied painting under Alexander. Ross was persuaded he could succeed on his own by Annette Kowalski, who had attended one of his sessions in Clearwater, Florida.
Ross was known for having permed hair, which he eventually loathed but kept after incorporating it into the business logo. When his art class was broadcast as a pilot in 1982 by a station in Falls Church, Virginia, 60 PBS stations expressed interest in carrying the program.
He was brought to Muncie, Indiana in 1983 by PBS station WIPB with the promise of creative freedom, and he quickly made friends with the employees.
In 1989, he returned to his Florida home, but he continued to visit Muncie every three months to record the show. Ross claimed he produced the event for no charge and made money selling instructional books, videos, and painting supplies.
Reruns of the program, which ran from January 11, 1983, to May 17, 1994, are still broadcast in various broadcast markets and nations, including the non-profit digital subchannel network Create and the streaming platform Hulu.
