Best Escape from Tarkov early wipe weapon builds, from UMP to VPO

You can’t always go for the meta weapons in Escape from Tarkov, as everyone will need to gravitate towards the best early wipe weapon builds at least twice a year. While stalwart guns like the UMP .45 have remained super strong at the start of each reset, changes to weapon availability and our ammo tier list have meant that the ideal beginner choices have shifted slightly in the game.

Thankfully we’ve always got the best choices for you right here, keeping you informed on the ideal attachments and ammo you should be using in the early game as you crawl through maps like Customs and Woods.

What are the best early wipe weapon builds in EFT?

The three weapons that we’ve picked for our early wipe builds  in Escape from Tarkovare the UMP .45, VPO-209, and VPO-215, covering all of the bases with an SMG, Assault Rifle, and Sniper.

You can pick up all of the weapons and parts here without needing to complete any quests or level up any of your Traders, so these will be good to go from the beginning – albeit with a little bit of searching for some barter items.

UMP .45 build

You can create this early wipe UMP .45 build by purchasing the following weapon parts and applying them to the weapon:

PartPrice (Trader)
NcSTAR Tactical blue laser LAM-module5,658₽ (Skier LL1)
KAC vertical foregrip$27 (Peacekeeper LL1)

This is a super simple build to create, as the parts are just slapped straight onto the weapon with no complications. It is also completely optional to use either of these parts, as the UMP .45 is still super strong on its own – the laser just adds hip-fire accuracy and the foregrip dampens the already low recoil a little further.

Getting the UMP .45 itself is a little bit trickier, as you cannot buy it outright and instead need to opt for one of two barters:

Barter ItemsTrader
  • 4x Bars A-2607 Damascus knife
  • 1x ER FULCRUM BAYONET
Peacekeeper LL1
  • 1x DVD drive
  • 1x Damaged hard drive
  • 2x Capacitors
Mechanic LL1

Both of these barters are unlocked from the beginning though, and the items aren’t too hard to find if you’re playing your Scav on maps like Interchange or Reserve.

Finally, you’ll want to make sure that you’re using the .45 ACP Match FMJ ammo, purchased from Peacekeeper LL1 for $1 each. This round does a massive 72 damage with 25 penetration, dealing handily with Class 3 armour and serving well for leg meta otherwise.

This is by far my early wipe build of choice and has remained so for a few years now. The sheer damage of Match FMJ combined with the low recoil of the UMP has carried through so many raids and helped me drop many a PMC too.

I have found it tricky to pick up the UMP in the early days of each wipe due to the popularity of this approach, but knowing the Trader reset times and having a bit of luck can serve you well.

VPO-209 build

Our next choice comes in the form of the VPO-209, giving you greater flexibility across medium-range battles. Here are all of the parts that you’ll need to pick up for the build:

PartPrice (Trader)
AK AKademia Bastion dust cover6,325₽ (Skier LL1)
AK 7.62×39 Magpul PMAG 20 GEN 20-round magazine2,746₽ (Skier LL1)
Walther MRS reflex sight13,800₽ (Skier LL1)
WASR-10/63 CAF wooden foregrip3,968₽ (Skier LL1)

You will need to remove the VPO-208 rear sight and the Molot AKM-type dust cover to attach the Bastion and subsequently the MRS reflex, so bear that in mind if they aren’t working.

You can also leave off the Bastion and MRS reflex if you’re looking to save a little bit of money and opt for iron sights; although, that’ll make the gun quite difficult to be accurate with, so do take that into consideration.

You can pick up the VPO-209 from Skier LL1 for 28,378₽, meaning that this complete build will set you back 55,217₽ – although a big chunk of that is the reflex sight.

For your ammo of choice, the .366 TKM FMJ is the ideal choice right from the start with 98 damage and 23 penetration, but you’ll want to move to the .366 TKM EKO ammo once you’ve unlocked Jaeger from the Introduction quest, as that deals with Class 3 and 4 armour better with 73 damage and 30 penetration.

While the VPO-209 might not have the flashy fully-automatic capabilities that you’d want from an Assault Rifle, the options for that are essentially non-existent at the start of the wipe, thus semi-auto firing is the way to go.

With the removal of 7.62×39 PS from Prapor LL1, .366 EKO is definitely the meta choice, letting you be accurate and deadly across medium ranges.

I love opting for this build when I’m going for a more methodical approach in my raids, as it works excellently on beginner maps like Customs, Woods, and even Shoreline as you progress due to their longer sightlines.

VPO-215 build

Finally, if sniping is more of your thing, check out all of the parts you’ll need for the ideal VPO-215 build below:

PartPrice (Trader)
Leapers UTG 25mm ring scope mount1,733₽ (Jaeger LL1)
VOMZ Pilad 4×32 24.5mm riflescope15,192₽ (Jaeger LL1)

While the Mosin is available from Prapor LL1 and is much stronger than the VPO-215, it is unfortunately only the Infantry variant and thus is unable to have a scope equipped.

That’s where the VPO steps in, giving you a great stealthy sniper build for a low cost.

Compared to the other builds we’ve listed, you will need to complete Introduction and unlock Jaeger to get this weapon and its parts. But that is so early on, it isn’t really a huge deal.

Just slap the Leapers scope mount onto the gun and the VOMZ Pilad scope after that and you’ll be good to jump into your next raid and test your aim.

As you’ll be at Jaeger already, you can skip straight to the .366 TKM EKO rounds for this gun, which can be purchased for a measly 69₽ per round. Combine this with the  18,585₽ that you’ll have to send over to Jaeger for the gun itself, and you’ll have a complete sniping kit for 35,510₽ plus ammo.

Admittedly, this VPO-215 is probably my least favourite sniper to use in Escape from Tarkov, as it has a relatively poor MOA and the ammo isn’t quite good enough to get one-hit kills on most targets. However, for the early game, it’s great – so you’d better use it while you still can.

There are obviously plenty of other weapons that you can use in the early game of Escape from Tarkov, but these are the three that we think work best if you’re looking to escape from your raids unscathed.

That’s everything you need to know about the best early wipe weapon builds in Escape from Tarkov.
