Cardin’s political career began in the Maryland House of Delegates, where he served from 1967 to 1987 and held the position of speaker from 1979 to 1987, making him the youngest person to ever occupy that role. Remarkably, he has never faced defeat in any of the elections throughout his half-century-long career.
Born on October 5, 1943, Cardin entered the U.S. Senate in 2006, succeeding Paul Sarbanes by defeating Republican Michael Steele, the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, with a 54% to 44% margin. He secured reelection in 2012 with 56% of the vote and became Maryland’s senior U.S. senator on January 3, 2017, following Barbara Mikulski’s retirement. Cardin won a third term in 2018 with 65% of the vote. However, he announced his retirement and will not seek reelection in 2024.

Ben Cardin and Myrna Edelman are parents to a daughter named Deborah. Tragically, their family also faced the heart-wrenching loss of their son, Michael, born in either 1967 or 1968. Michael’s life ended in a devastating manner, as he succumbed to suicide on March 24, 1998, at the tender age of 30.
In 1964, Ben Cardin
earned a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. He furthered his education by obtaining a Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1967, graduating as the top student in his class. Cardin was admitted to the Maryland Bar the same year and worked in the private practice of Rosen and Esterson until 1978.
Ben Cardin’s involvement in international affairs includes serving as a Commissioner on the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (the U.S. Helsinki Commission) since 1993. He held various leadership positions on the commission, including Ranking Member and co-chair. Additionally, Cardin was elected vice president of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly in 2006, serving until 2014.
Throughout his career, Cardin has received honorary degrees from several institutions, including the University of Baltimore School of Law, University of Maryland, Baltimore, Baltimore Hebrew University, Goucher College, and Villa Julie College. As of 2016, he sits on the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland School of Law.
Cardin has actively contributed to legal services and education, chairing the Maryland Legal Services Corp. from 1988 to 1995 and serving on the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1999. He was also appointed to the St. Mary’s Advisory Board for the Study of Democracy in 2002 and the Goucher College Board of Trustees in 1999. His commitment to St. Mary’s College extended to his instrumental role in establishing the Center for the Study of Democracy, where he served on the advisory board.
