Back Up App Settings Before Upgrading to Windows 10

Now that we all know the upcoming version of Windows, i.e. Windows 10, will be free for everyone, which gives us even more reason to upgrade. Time and time again I have mentioned the fact that flashing Android OS is much easier than formatting/upgrading Windows OS. Photo data, music, and other important files can be easily backed up on both operating systems, but Android offers the ability to backup app settings to restore after an upgrade.

Android saved app data, when restored, takes the hassle out of going to every nook and cranny of settings to make them look like you had before flashing.

Well, until a few months ago, there was no software that could do that on Windows. But not anymore. Just in time for most of us to upgrade to Windows 10, there is a tool that can backup your installed app settings.

CloneApp for Windows

CloneApp is a nifty tool that can easily backup and restore application-based settings of several popular Windows applications. The app is portable by nature, so you can unzip it to a folder when you download it – It’s not recommended to unzip the app in the system folder though.

After you download and run the application, the first thing you will notice is the interface that resembles CCleaner.

Under Clones installed, you will find a list of all the applications supported by CloneApp. The full list can be found at this link, but some of the most useful are Google Chrome, Microsoft Office, iTunes, uTorrent. Now all you need to do is select the apps you have installed on the system and click the button Start CloneApp. The Select Installed the option will automatically select the apps you have installed on the system and make sure that you don’t miss any apps.

The application creates a backup of all the files and registry settings present on your computer. The backup does not include installed files, but related files used by the application, or any profile data the application has on your system. As is the case with iTunes, the app backs up the entire library along with user settings from the registry. The backup is saved to the same folder where you unzipped the app.

Note: The registry backup process is quick, but if files must be copied, it may take some time to copy all related files. If the process is interrupted midway, please delete all entries in the backup folder and start the process again.

Bonus added

Officially, the app supports about 138 apps, but additional apps can be added in the future using simple plugins. If you know the backup path of a particular app, click customize and create a manual backup. Select files, folders and registry keys and add it to the backup list.

Another cool feature of the application is the ability to generate a list of all the applications currently installed on your system. This list can then be used to keep track of any applications you require after your system is upgraded. Lists can be created by pressing the Windows button and clicking on options Export the app to a test file.

Let’s work together to make upgrading to Windows 10 easy

Ninite, DriverMagic and now CloneApp. The combination of these three free utilities can really eliminate the pain of initial configuration after installing a new version of Windows. Create cloud backups of data from these apps, and you’ll be protected for years to come. Also, if you would like to recommend a tool that can help with the migration to Windows 10, feel free to leave a comment. It will help me and our readers have a smooth transition.
