Back-to-Back Championships: Who is the Biggest Threat to the Kansas City Chiefs?

It’s been a remarkable rise to the top for the Kansas City Chiefs, who have reached three Super Bowls in the last four years, lifting the Vince Lombardi trophy on two occasions. Patrick Mahomes will be eyeing up a third ring, but which side poses the biggest threat to Kansas City’s dominant reign?

AFC Championship Rivals

The Chiefs have been the superior force in the AFC for almost half a decade, so it’s not too surprising to see them as favorites in the NFL odds to win their Conference at +350. That still represents good value given the strength of their roster, with the free bet calculator showing that a $10 bet each way on Kansas City to win the AFC Championship returns over $70.

Their closest competition is likely the Buffalo Bills, who currently sit at +450 to win the AFC Championship. The Bills have one of the best quarterback and wide receiver duos in the league, with Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs ranking 8th and 16th respectively in the NFL’s top 100 players in 2023. But for all of their talent, they have consistently fallen short of the Chiefs. Buffalo were beaten 38-24 by Kansas City in the 2021 AFC Championship game, before losing 42-36 against them a year later in the 2022 Divisional Playoffs.

The Cincinnati Bengals could also pose a threat and are priced at +650. The emergence of 26-year-old Joe Burrow has seen them rise to prominence, and the star quarterback has shown he can go toe-to-toe with Patrick Mahomes. The Bengals beat the Chiefs 27-24 (OT) in the 2021 AFC Championship game, before narrowly losing out 23-20 at the same stage last season.

NFC Super Bowl Contenders

Should the Chiefs make a fourth Super Bowl in five years, there is every chance they meet the Philadelphia Eagles there once again. The Eagles are +300 favorites to win the NFC Championship and are behind only the Kansas City Chiefs to lift the Lombardi at +700. The Eagles have two of the NFL’s biggest stars in quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver A.J. Brown. The pair will undoubtedly combine for plenty of match-winning moments and they will be key in steering Philly to back-to-back Super Bowls.

The San Francisco 49ers (+350) and Dallas Cowboys (+450) are the two franchises expected to challenge the Eagles for the NFC title. They met in last season’s Divisional Playoffs, with the 49ers running away 19-12 winners. The 49ers’ chances of another Super Bowl will rest on the shoulders of their impressive defensive unit, led by 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa. When you toss in the talent of tight end George Kittle and the experience of offensive tackle Trent Williams, there is a lot to like about this well-rounded San Francisco side.

It’s the Chiefs’ to Lose

If Kansas City reaches the heights we know they can, there simply isn’t a team capable of stopping them. Two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes is cementing himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, with his right-hand man Travis Kelce undoubtedly the best tight end in the NFL. It will take a lot to stop them from claiming a fourth Championship.
