Having earned a B.B.A. in risk management and insurance from the University of Georgia, Scott also passed the Series 7 Exam. Beyond his political career, he holds the position of president at the Southern Group, LLC and serves as a partner in Lockett Station Group, LLC.
Austin Scott entered the political arena at the age of 26 when he was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives. During his time there, he chaired the Governmental Affairs Committee and contributed to various committees, including Appropriations, Rules, and Ways and Means. Notably, in 2001, he became the first Republican in the Georgia House to collaborate with Democrats to remove the Confederate battle emblem from the state’s flag.
Demonstrating his stance on global affairs, especially in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Scott consistently advocated for military aid to Ukraine. As of October 2023, he received an “A”-rating on the congressional report card on Ukraine support by Defending Democracy Together.
Addressing women’s issues, Austin Scott’s voting record includes support for the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2012 and the Deborah Sampson Act in 2019, aimed at enhancing healthcare access for women veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs.
In the realm of electoral politics, Scott was one of the Republican representatives who signed an amicus brief in support of Texas v. Pennsylvania, a lawsuit contesting the results of the 2020 presidential election. Additionally, during the 2021 Electoral College vote certification, he did not object to the results and condemned the violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Notably, Scott attended President Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021. His involvement also extends to issues related to Confederate names, as he was appointed to the Congressionally mandated Commission on the Naming of Items of the Department of Defense that Commemorate the Confederate States of America or Any Person Who Served Voluntarily with the Confederate States of America.
On immigration matters, Scott sponsored H.R. 6202, the American Tech Workforce Act of 2021, which aims to establish a wage floor for the high-skill H-1B visa program, reducing employer dependence on the program. The bill also seeks to eliminate the Optional Practical Training program allowing foreign graduates to stay and work in the United States of America.
