Griffith, the lone child of Carl Lee Griffith and his wife Geneva, was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina. Griffith was raised by relatives while still a baby until his parents could afford to buy a house. He spent several months sleeping in dresser drawers because he had neither a crib nor a bed.
