Andrew Symonds, one of the most recognisable names in the past decade of world cricket, died in a car crash in his native country in the wee hours of Saturday. Cricket Australia’s announcement came as a tragic blow to the sport, especially after the recent deaths of legends like Shane Warne and Rod Marsh.
The Accident
Andrew was the sole occupant of the car when this tragedy struck. The accident took place around 50 kilometres away from Townsville in Australia. His fatal crash came just months after the deaths of Shane Warne and Rod Marsh, both of whom died of heart attacks.
In a statement, Queensland Police said they were investigating the single-car crash in Hervey Range Road. “Early information indicates, shortly after 11 pm the car was being driven on Hervey Range Road, near Alice River Bridge when it left the roadway and rolled.” “Emergency services attempted to revive the 46-year-old driver and sole occupant, however, he died of his injuries.” the statement further quoted.

Symonds was one of the most feared players in the game of cricket in the last decade. His contributions to Australia’s famous back to back world cup wins in 2003 and 2007 were immense. Naturally aggressive, Symonds made notable contributions to test cricket as well.
The flamboyant all-rounder made his international debut versus Pakistan in November 1998. His test debut came five years later against Sri Lanka.
Roy, as he was commonly called, scored over 5000 runs for his side in ODIs, with an average of 39.75. He also scalped 133 wickets. In test cricket, Andrew made 26 appearances scoring 1462 runs with an average surpassing 40.

Andrew represented two teams in the IPL – Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians. In the first season, the Hyderabad based franchise picked him up for US$1,350,000, making him the second most expensive player. He made significant contributions in the later stages of the second IPL season helping the Deccan chargers win the championship. He famously brought the Mongoose bat into action.
