Sachs worked on radio programs in the late 1950s while still a college student studying shipping management, such as Frederick Br adnum’s early experimental show Private Dreams and Public Nightmares, which was produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

In 1958’s Whitehall farce Simple Spymen, Sachs made his West End debut as Grobchick, continuing his repertory theater acting training.

He appeared in cinema for the first time in 1959’s The Night We Dropped a Clanger. Throughout the 1960s, he had several television appearances, including a few in ITC productions like The Saint (1962) and Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969).

The character of Manuel, the Spanish waiter in the classic comedy Fawlty Towers (1975 and 1979), for which Sachs was nominated for a BAFTA award (the trophy went to co-star John Cleese), is the one for which he is most remembered.

In character as Manuel, Sachs recorded three singles, the first of which was “Manuel’s Good Food Guide” in 1977, the cover of which featured him. The tunes were co-written by Sachs.

He was featured on This Is Your Life in 1980 after Eamonn Andrews surprised him during a personal appearance as Manuel at the HMV shop on Oxford Street in London.

Sachs was frequently heard narrating radio and television documentaries, such as the five seasons of the BAFTA Award-winning Troubleshooter, a BBC business television series hosted by Sir John Harvey-Jones, and the…from Hell series on ITV.

In the 1994 English-language adaptation of Jan Vankmajer’s film Faust, Sachs provided all the voices. Asterix and the Big Fight, Little Grey Rabbit, The Forgotten Toys, William’s Wish Wellingtons, Starhill Ponies, The Gingerbread Man, Little Grey Rabbit, and the horse in the English-language version of 1970s cult TV series Monkey are just a few of the animated children’s shows he voiced.

Sachs sang Urchin of the Riding Stars, the first book of The Mistmantle Chronicles, for the audiobook edition in 2005.

It was revealed on November 17, 2008, that Sachs had been asked to take part in the ITV serial opera Coronation Street. He made his street debut in May 2009 as Ramsay, Norris’ brother. He left in August 2009 after 27 episodes.
