Ana Ofelia Murguia’s death was announced “with deep sadness” on X (formerly Twitter) b y Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature which said Murguía’s “artistic career was vital for the performing arts of Mexico”
“We send condolences and warm hugs to her family and friends,” the institute added but did not mention her cause of death making it unknown whether she battled any form of illness before she died.

Born in Mexico City, Murguia studied acting at Mexico’s National School of Theatre Arts and eventually landed her first role in 1954 in the play “Trial By Fire”.
In 1964, she had her first screen role in the film “Transit”. She also starred in the films; “Para servir a usted”, “El profeta Mimi”, “Esa es mi Irene”, “La viuda negra”, “Naufragio”, “Cadena perpetua”, “Amor libre”, “Dune”, and “María de mi corazón”.
Murguia won best supporting actress at the Ariel Awards, Mexico’s preeminent acting prizes, in 1979, 1986, and 1996 for films including La Reina de la Noche (The Queen of the Night).
In 2011, she won a lifetime achievement Golden Ariel Award recognizing significant figures in the Mexican cinema industry. In later years, she was best known for voicing Mama Coco in the 2017 Disney-Pixar animated movie “Coco”.
Coco won two Academy Awards, for best-animated feature and best original song for Remember Me, which Murguía sings at the film’s end in a duet with Miguel, Coco’s great-grandson.
At the time of her death, she was one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema
