All You Should Know About Prince Nelson: Late American Singer

Prince Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was a singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and actor from the United States. He is widely recognized as one of the best artists of his period, having received several honors and nominations.

He was known for his flamboyant, androgynous persona; his wide vocal range, which featured a high-pitched falsetto; and his skill as a multi-instrumentalist, frequently preferring to play all or most of the instruments on his records. His songs included funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, blues, and hip-hop, among other styles. Prince produced his records, establishing the Minneapolis sound.

Who is Prince Nelson?

Prince Nelson was born in Minneapolis on June 7, 1958. He is the son of jazz singer Mattie Della and pianist and songwriter John Lewis Nelson. His four grandparents were all from Louisiana. His great-grandmother was the black nationalist Mittie Maude Lena Gordon, who founded the Ethiopian Peace Movement and called for emigration to West Africa in opposition to American white supremacy. His paternal relative was jazz musician Louis Hayes.

Prince was named after his father’s most famous stage name, Prince Rogers, which he used when performing with Prince’s mother in the Prince Rogers Trio, a jazz group.

Prince’s father told A Current Affair in 1991 that he named his son “Prince” because he wanted his son to “do everything I wanted to do.” Prince disliked his given name and preferred to be addressed as “Skipper,” a moniker that persisted with him throughout his boyhood.

He went on to say, ‘My mother told me one day I walked into her and said, ‘Mom, I’m not going to be sick longer,’ and she said, ‘Why?’ and I responded, ‘Because an angel told me so.’ Tyka, Prince’s younger sister, was born on May 18, 1960. Both siblings developed a strong interest in music, which their father fostered.

What is Prince Nelson’s career?

In 1975, Pepe Willie (the husband of Prince’s cousin Shauntel), formed the band 94 East with Marcy Ingvoldstad and Kristie Lazenberry, hiring André Cymone and Prince to record tracks. Willie wrote the songs, and Prince contributed guitar tracks, and Prince and Willie co-wrote the 94 East song, “Just Another Sucker”. The band recorded tracks which later became the album Minneapolis Genius – The Historic 1977 Recordings. In 1976, shortly after graduating from Central High School, Prince created a demo tape with producer Chris Moon, in Moon’s Minneapolis studio.

In the absence of a recording contract, Moon took the cassette to Owen Husney, a Minneapolis businessman, who signed Prince, then 19, to a management contract and assisted him in creating a demo at Sound 80 Studios in Minneapolis (with producer/engineer David Z). Several record labels, including Warner Bros. Records, A&M Records, and Columbia Records, expressed interest in the sample tape and a press kit provided by Husney’s ad agency.

Prince obtained a recording contract with Warner Bros. with the help of Husney. The record label decided to give Prince artistic control over three albums while still retaining his publishing rights. Husney and Prince then relocated to Sausalito, California, to record Prince’s first album, For You, at Record Plant Studios. On April 7, 1978, the album was mixed in Los Angeles and released. Except for the song “Soft and Wet,” whose lyrics were co-written by Moon, Prince wrote, produced, arranged, composed, and performed all 27 instruments on the For You album. The album’s production cost twice as much as Prince’s initial advance.
