Chou gained to prominence following the release of his second studio album, Fantasy (2001), which fused Western and East Asian music traditions. Five Golden Melody Awards were given to the record, including Record of the Year.

Who is Jay Chou?

Jay Chou grew up in Linkou, Taipei County, Taiwan. His parents both taught secondary school: his mother, Yeh Hui-Mei (; Yè Humi), was an art teacher who taught fine arts, while his father, Chou Yao-Chung (; Zhu Yàozhng), is a biomedical researcher. His mother spotted his musical sensitivity and enrolled him in piano lessons when he was four years old.

During his childhood, he was obsessed with recording sounds and tunes on his tape recorder, which he carried around with him everywhere. He became interested in music theory and began cello instruction in the third grade.

He was an only child who enjoyed playing the piano, impersonating TV actors, and doing magic tricks. Chopin was and continues to be his favorite composer. Jay attended Taipei Jinhua High School. When he was 14, his parents divorced, and he was bullied by his classmates, causing him to become reclusive and introverted.

Chou was drafted for military service after graduating from high school with insufficient grades to attend university. However, chronic back discomfort caused by athletics led to a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis (HLA-B27), and he was discharged from the military. Meanwhile, he worked as a waitress.

How did Jay Chou career begin?

Chou’s mother first urged him to become a music instructor, while Chou was unsure of what he wanted to do with his life. In 1998, a friend registered both of their identities in a talent competition called Super New Talent King without his knowledge. Chou provided piano accompaniment for his friend’s “lousy” singing.

Even though they did not win, the show’s host, Jacky Wu, an influential figure in Taiwan’s entertainment industry, happened to glance at the music score and was astonished by its complexity.

Wu then inquired as to who had written it, identified Chou, recruited him as a contract composer, and partnered him with the inexperienced poet Vincent Fang, for his former record label, Alfa Music. Chou then spent the majority of his time in Wu’s studio, where he learned music production, sound mixing, recording, and songwriting.

Despite his classical training, Chou merges Chinese and Western music forms to create songs that fuse R&B, rock, and pop genres. Wu, on the other hand, informed Chou that if he composed 50 songs, he would help Chou release an album, and he would choose ten of them.

Chou already had a backlog of songs he had written for others but had been rejected, so he chose 10 for his debut CD album, Jay, which was published in 2000. His reputation as a musically skilled singer-songwriter whose sound is a combination of R&B, rap, classical music, and still unmistakably Chinese was cemented with the album. His popularity spread swiftly throughout Southeast Asia’s Overseas Chinese populations and Sinophone-speaking regions.
