After developing a good wrestling foundation, Faber trained under Fábio “Pateta” Prado, gaining a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He began his MMA career with the Gladiator Challenge promotion, defeating his first opponent with a guillotine choke in 2003. More victories followed, but in 2005, he lost to Tyson Griffin for the first time. He concluded his career at Gladiator Challenge with a few more victories before transitioning to World Extreme Cage Fighting.
His first WEC fight was in 2006 when he defeated Cole Escovedo to capture the WEC Featherweight Championship. He later returned to Gladiator Challenge in 2006 to reclaim the Bantamweight Championship by defeating Naoya Uematsu.

Dominick Cruz had been yearning to avenge his earlier loss to Urijah for many years, and the rematch finally happened in 2011. Cruz was victorious, winning the bout by unanimous decision. However, Faber rebounded with a victory over Brian Bowles, putting himself in line for a title chance.
Following his victory, Urijah went on to become a coach for the show “The Ultimate Fighter: Live.” Dominick Cruz was also appointed as a coach, reigniting their feud. The third battle between the two boxers was scheduled for 2012, however, it was canceled due to Cruz’s ACL injury.
