All You Need to Know About Steel Pulse: Reggae Legend

Steel Pulse is a root reggae band from Birmingham, England’s Erdington district. They were originally constituted of David Hinds (lead vocals, guitar), Basil Gabbidon (lead guitar, vocals), and Ronald McQueen (bass), with Basil’s brother Colin briefly on drums and Mykaell Riley (vocals, percussion). Steel Pulse were the first non-Jamaican artist to be nominated for a Grammy for Best Reggae Album.

Who are Steel Pulse?

After hearing Bob Marley and The Wailers’ Catch a Fire, Basil Gabbidon and David Hinds were inspired to start Steel Pulse. The band was formed in 1975, and their debut single “Kibudu, Mansetta, And Abuku” was released on the small independent label Dip, linking the struggle of urban black youth with the vision of a larger African motherland.

They then sang “Nyah Luv” for Anchor. Due to their Rastafarian views, they were first refused live appearances in Caribbean venues in Birmingham. Steel Pulse began playing punk venues such as the Hope and Anchor in London and The Electric Circus in Manchester in 1976, with the rise of punk rock.

Aligning themselves closely with the Rock Against Racism organisation and performing at its first music event in early 1978, they opted to tour with sympathetic punk groups such as the Stranglers, XTC, and others. They eventually found a more natural place as Burning Spear’s support act, which brought them to the attention of Island Records.

How many people formed the Steel Pulse band?

Hafari, Wayne Clarke, David Elecciri, Stephen Bradley, Zem Audu, Baruch Hinds, and David Hinds are among those who have contributed to this work.
