In 1988, he was named head coach at SC Korb. He spent two seasons there before returning to VfB Stuttgart for four seasons to manage the Under 19 team. He took over as head coach of Reutlingen 05 in 1995 and remained there for two seasons.
Rangnick took over VfB Stuttgart in 1999, becoming the club’s first-team coach after previously playing and coaching at the amateur and under-19 levels.
