Zibanejad used to play football when he was younger. When he was six, he started playing ice hockey with Hammarby IF. After the club declared bankruptcy in 2008, Zibanejad began playing junior hockey for AIK IF’s youth department. During the 2009–10 season, he joined Djurgårdens IF’s under-18 and under-20 squads.
