He went on to enjoy an unbroken winning streak in 1989, defeating Carl Penn, Sammy Jenkins, Steve Chaney, Lemark Davis, Ricardo Simpson, and Joe Johnson. In 1990, he won every fight save two, which ended in draws.
Toney achieved his greatest career success in May 1991, when he defeated Michael Nunn to win the IBF and lineal middleweight crowns.
