Bill Maher is a comedian, actor, political commentator, and television host from the United States. He is best known for his HBO political talk show Real Time with Bill Maher and the similar late-night show Politically Incorrect, which aired on Comedy Central before moving to ABC, and in 2022, he launched the podcast Club Random.

Bill Maher Parents

Maher was born and raised in New York City. His father, William Aloysius Maher Jr., was a network news editor and radio announcer, and his mother, Julie Maher, was a nurse.

His Irish-American father raised him in the Roman Catholic faith. He didn’t realize his mother’s family was Jewish until he was in his early twenties.

Maher’s father stopped taking him and his sister to Catholic church services when he was thirteen because he disagreed with the Catholic Church’s doctrine on birth control.

Career

Maher’s career started as a stand-up comic and actor. In 1979, he was the host of the New York City comedy club Catch a Rising Star. In the year 1982, the renowned personality began appearing on Johnny Carson’s and David Letterman’s shows.

He appeared on Sara, Max Headroom Murder, She Wrote, and Charlie Hoover, among other shows. In D.C. Cab, he made his feature film debut. He later appeared in Ratboy, House II: The Second Story, Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, Newhart, and Pizza Man, as well as hosting the CBS talk show Midnight Hour.

Awards and Honors

Maher was nominated for 41 Primetime Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Informational Series or Special for Vice in 2015. He was also nominated for two Grammy Awards and several Producers Guild of America and Writers Guild of America awards.

High Times named Maher the “Top Pot Comic in 2006,” and Real Time won a Stony Award for “Best Cable News Show” in 2006. He was later named “Stoner of the Year” by High Times.

Personal Life

Maher has never married, and he is quoted on his website as saying about marriage, “I’m the last of my male friends who hasn’t married, and their wives don’t want them playing with me. I’m like the escaped slave—I bring good news.”

He began dating former Playboy Cyber Girl Coco Johnsen in 2003. At the end of their 17-month relationship in November 2004, Johnsen sued Maher for US$9 million in “pain and suffering” for alleged “insulting, humiliating, and degrading racial comments.”

According to her suit, Maher promised to marry her and father her children, as well as financially support her and purchase a home in Beverly Hills.
