Alister Jack successfully entered the House of Commons in the 2017 general election, representing the rural Scottish constituency of Dumfries and Galloway. He defeated the incumbent Scottish National Party MP Richard Arkless and was among the 13 Scottish Conservative MPs elected, the highest number since 1983.

During the 57th Parliament, Jack served on the Treasury Select Committee and contributed to a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May in February 2018, offering suggestions on the UK’s exit from the European Union.

His political roles continued to evolve as he became the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Leader of the House of Lords in August 2018 and later an Assistant Government Whip in February 2019. On 23 April 2019, he was appointed Lord Commissioner of the Treasury.

Boris Johnson appointed Alister Jack as the Secretary of State for Scotland on 24 July 2019, making him the first Cabinet member from the 2017 intake. He successfully retained his seat in the 2019 general election with an increased share of the vote but a reduced majority.

In September 2022, Jack was reappointed to the Truss ministry. He played a significant role in the Accession Council and Principal Proclamation for King Charles III on 10 September 2022.

As a member of the Royal Company of Archers, Jack stood vigil at Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin alongside Cabinet Minister Ben Wallace on 15 September 2022.

He retained his position when Rishi Sunak became prime minister on 25 October 2022. On 17 January 2023, Jack exercised the Section 35 power granted by the 1998 Scotland Act, preventing the Scottish Government’s Gender Recognition Reform Bill from proceeding to Royal Assent.

On 17 May 2023, Alister Jack announced his decision to stand down at the next general election. He had faced a bout of COVID-19 symptoms and began self-isolating on 28 March 2020, becoming the third Cabinet minister to do so.
