During a game against the Sheffield Steelers at Utilita Arena on October 28, 2023, Johnson suffered a fatal injury to his neck after Steelers player Matt Petgrave’s skate[19] sliced it during an on-ice collision.

Following the collision, Johnson tried to skate to the team bench before passing out on the ice. Players from both teams surrounded Johnson with their arms in a protective circle as paramedics attended to him before screens were installed and the arena was evacuated.

At the age of 29, Johnson was officially declared dead and moved to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. While Johnson’s family was informed, the public was not informed of Johnson’s passing until the next morning.

After Johnson passed away, hundreds of supporters gathered outside Nottingham Arena, the Panthers’ home rink, together with players and staff to create a temporary memorial for the player by laying flowers and other mementos.

Johnson was a 2015 USHL All-Star after playing junior hockey for the Indiana Ice and Sioux City Musketeers in the United States Hockey League (USHL). He played two seasons of collegiate hockey in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) with the University of Minnesota Duluth after going undrafted.

After playing for the Bulldogs for two seasons in 2016–17, during which he finished second on the team in goals and points with 18 goals in 42 games, Johnson sealed Minnesota-Duluth’s spot in the 2017 Frozen Four with a power play goal in overtime that helped the team defeat Boston University, 3-2. In the NCAA title game, Johnson and the Bulldogs ultimately lost 3-2 to the University of Denver.
