He progressed through the Phillies’ farm system in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, becoming the first pitcher since Pat Combs in 1989 to make his major league debut the season after being selected.

Nola did well in his first full season with the Phillies in 2016, but he was forced to leave the game early because of an elbow issue. To surpass Curt Schilling’s 1996 mark of the most strikeouts by a Phillies pitcher with fewer than 30 starts in a season, he came back in 2017.

Even though Nola only pitched for 5 innings and allowed 5 runs, including two home runs to Kyle Tucker, the Phillies were able to tie the game and went on to win it in the 10th inning thanks to J. T. Realmuto’s game-winning home run.

Nola, however, was the losing pitcher in Game 4 of the World Series, which the Phillies ultimately lost in six games. In that game, Nola held the Astros scoreless for four innings before loading the bases in the fifth inning and being removed. As a result of Jose Alvarado’s poor performance, the Astros then scored five runs in that inning.
