6 games like Spider-Man 2 to play in 2023, from God of War to Infamous

With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 firmly in the hands of excited players, you may be looking for some similar games once you’ve caught the bud (or arachnid), so we’ve got a whole list of the best games like Spider-Man 2 that you should be playing this year.

Our web-slinging hero is known for his heroic feats and swinging across New York to take down the baddest of the bad, and traversing the city is nothing short of spectacular. As such, games similar to Spider-Man 2 should have the same level of grandiosity.

So, for something similar to scratch that Spider-Man itch (or, uh, bite?) once you’ve played the sequel, check out our game recommendations below.

How we chose the best games like Spider-Man

When choosing Spider-Man-like games for our list, we focused on heroic narratives, flowing combat, and open-world exploration that would emulate the feeling of becoming everyone’s friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.

Additionally, we also looked at titles that would contextually and thematically that you may wish to play before or after picking up Spider-Man 2.

6 – Assassin’s Creed Mirage

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
  • Release date: 2023
  • Key features:
    • Stealth-focused gameplay
    • Vast open-world
    • Vibrant graphics and environments

If ever there’s a game that encourages you to takedown a gaggle of goons in the stealthiest manner possible, it’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage. While Peter and Miles won’t be killing anyone anytime soon (although some of those finishing moves look a little questionable), the stealthy encounters in Spider-Man 2 stand toe-to-toe with AC Mirage.

While Basim’s methods may not be entirely heroic, the way he traverses a map is incredibly dynamic and fluid. If you want to swap web-slinging in New York for jumping from building to building in Baghdad, then AC Mirage is the game for you.

5 – Infamous: Second Son

  • Platforms: PS4
  • Release date: 2014
  • Key features:
    • Superpowers in the city
    • Morality systems and player choices
    • Reboot of established series

As far as reboots go, Infamous: Second Son is one of the most underrated. Sharing a similar quippy protagonist as he grapples with his newfound powers and explores a city, the comparisons to Spider-Man are clear to see.

Introducing a morality system into the mix that has our hero struggle to remain on the right or wrong side, shows that even the heroes of the story grapple to stay in the light.

4 – Batman: Arkham City

  • Platforms: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
  • Release date: 2011
  • Key features:
    • Genre-defining superhero game
    • Open world to glide and grapple through
    • Unique story and bosses

Perhaps one of, if not the most renowned superhero game, Batman: Arkham City builds on the legacy of its predecessor and lets you out into a large portion of Gotham City to swing and glide as freely as can be.

With the new glide mechanic in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the Spider and the Bat have never been more aligned. And while Arkham Knight may have a larger map, size isn’t everything – especially when Arkham City is the series at its peak.

3 – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

  • Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
  • Release date: 2019
  • Key features:
    • Stunning combat systems
    • Grapple across the land
    • Developed by FromSoftware

While it may seem odd to have one of the most renowned Soulslike games in a list about Spider-Man, hear me out: Sekiro is known for its flowing combat. A deadly dance as swords clash and heads roll. And Spider-Man’s combat flows just as wonderfully (albeit with much less bloodshed).

Alongside this, our titular shinobi’s prosthetic arm – aside from utilising several unique gadgets – also allows him to grapple and launch himself into various vantage points, though you won’t be seeing any tricks or quips in this game.

While I don’t think Spider-Man will be fighting a giant serpent anytime soon (although Lizard comes pretty close), Sekiro’s grappling will feel just as satisfying for those who enjoy the Spider-Man titles.

2 – God of War: Ragnarök

  • Platforms: PS5
  • Release date: 2022
  • Key features:
    • Concludes Norse Saga
    • Intriguing story
    • Builds on the relationship between Kratos and Atreus

If you’re looking to find a sequel to an iconic game released in 2018 done right, then God of War: Ragnarök is the game to play. The first God of War was released in the same year as Spider-Man and even went head-to-head for GOTY accolades. So, what better way to enjoy Spider-Man 2 than playing the sequel to the game that was released alongside the original?

The big draw here is the relationship between Kratos and Atreus. When compared to that of Miles and Peter in Spider-Man, it makes for a stark and interesting portrayal.

1 – Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Miles Morales, the best game to play before Spider-Man 2Click to enlarge

  • Platforms: PS4, PS5
  • Release date: 2020
  • Key features:
    • Bridges the gap between first and second games
    • Fleshes out Miles Morales’ story
    • Fluid combat

Maybe it’s cheating putting this in the top spot, but if there is any game like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that you should play it’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Despite being an intermediary title between the first and second games, Miles Morales stands as a fantastic game in its own right.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales combines the web-slinging action of the first game and compounds it with the expansion of Miles’ story since the events of that game. Additionally, after a slight upgrade, you can play the remastered version of Spider-Man (2018) if you haven’t already.

Additionally, for anyone picking up a PlayStation 5, this was one of the launch titles that ushered in the next generation, so makes sense to christen your shiny new console with one of the best games to play before Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

So, that’s our picks for some of the best games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. For more game recommendations, be sure to check out our list homepage for pages like the best games like Baldur’s Gate 3.
