When thinking of hiding an application on Android, we can think of disabling or uninstalling that application. But it has major drawback such as all your app data will be deleted and you will have to reset the app from scratch. To avoid all that, you can hide apps on your Android phone or tablet without shutting down using other methods shown in the post.
Everyone has different reasons for hiding apps. While some people want to hide dating apps, VPNs or social networks, others want to hide work related apps from children. Whatever the reason, the methods mentioned below will allow you to hide apps on Android without rooting your device.
Without making you more curious, let’s see how to hide apps on Android phones like Samsung, OnePlus, Redmi, etc. without shutting down the app.
1. Use the Stock Launcher
Phones from brands like Samsung, OnePlus and Redmi offer native feature to hide apps using their launcher. Here’s how to do it on them.
Hide apps on Samsung One UI Launcher
On the home screen, press and hold an empty space and tap Home screen settings. Scroll down and tap Hide Apps.
Select the apps you want to hide and tap Apply.
Tip: You can also use Secure Folder in your Samsung phone to hide apps.
Hide apps on Xiaomi Redmi phones
On a phone running MIUI, open the Security app on your app and go to App Lock. Add the apps you want to hide.
Hide apps with OnePlus Launcher
In the OnePlus Launcher, open the app drawer. Swipe right from the left edge of the screen. You will see Hidden Space. Tap the more (+) icon at the top and select the apps you want to hide.
2. Use a Third-Party Launcher
If your phone’s native launcher doesn’t offer the ability to hide apps, you can download third-party launchers like POCO and Evie. You can hide apps in these launchers using hide apps option available in launcher settings. Check out our detailed post with steps related to the launcher that allows you to hide apps.
3. Change app name and icon
An app is identified on your phone by its name and icon. What you need to do is change its name and icon to something else using the launcher. We will tell you the steps for the popular Nova Launcher. The basic idea of the steps remains the same across all launchers.
Open the app drawer in Nova Launcher. Long press on the app you want to hide. Select Edit from the menu.
Change the name of the app in the App Labels. Keep it something ordinary, such as a calculator. Then tap on the app icon and change the icon on the next screen. Again, keep it simple so people think it’s a system app.
Note: Changing an app’s name and icon is not a major feature in Nova Launcher. You can also do it in the free version.
4. Rename the folder
Another simple way to hide apps is to add them to a folder. Then name the folder in such a way that no one wants to touch it. Useless apps or bloatware, for example.
This method will hide the app on the app drawer or on the home screen based on where you added the app to a folder. While all launchers allow you to add apps to folders on your home screen, only a few offer a folder feature in the app drawer. And, if you don’t like the app drawer, check out the best launcher without an app drawer.
Tip: You can also use the folder swipe feature to hide apps. It’s available on apps like Nova and Action Launcher.
5. Use the multi-user feature
If you want to hide apps without launcher, you can use multi-user feature. Basically, you will have to create a new user and install secret apps in that profile. Each profile is independent of the other, and installed applications are available on the profile where they are installed.
To create a new user, open Settings on your phone and go to System. Tap Multiple users. Then click Add user. The steps may be different in different devices. Simply search for the user in the search available in Settings. Once a user is created, switch to that user from the users icon in the quick panel.
Bonus tip for Android users
Here are some tips that will help you in everyday life.
View application shortcuts
On an Android phone running Android Nougat 7.1 or later, press and hold an icon on the home screen to reveal an app shortcut. You can tap a shortcut to directly open an app feature.
View notification history
To view the notification log on your Android phone, long press on an empty space on the home screen and tap Widgets. Scroll down and find the Settings shortcut. Drag it to the home screen. Then, select Log Messages.
Tap Notification Log on the home screen to view missed notifications.
Be careful
The above methods will only hide apps from the app drawer and home screen. They will not be hidden in the installed apps section in Settings. So if someone is snooping on your phone, be careful. You will have to uninstall the app to hide it from settings.
