5 best games like Skull and Bones

If you’re excited to play Skull and Bones and you’re looking for some similar games to play, we’ve got you covered. This list will suggest some similar pirate/co-op adventures for you to get stuck into.

Whether it’s single-player quests or multiplayer voyages, these games should help to fill the gap. And once the game is out, you can always consider these other titles after you’ve played it. So without further ado, here are five of the best games like Skull and Bones.

Sea of Thieves

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • Release date: 2018
  • Key features:
    • Co-op and PvP
    • Immersive pirate adventure
    • Tons of things to collect and do

Sea of Thieves is the obvious pick. This is the biggest pirate game on the market right now, and offers a lot of similar content to what Skull and Bones has.

You can play the game with a crew of up to four players, and it’s got a lot of nautical adventures including treasure hunts, raids, story quests and more. If you prefer PvP, you can sail around hunting other players and taking their hard-earned loot for yourself.

It even has campaigns based on Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island, so if you’re a fan of those two franchises it’s definitely worth trying out.

This is the game Skull and Bones is essentially based on. People loved the sailing in Black Flag so much that Ubisoft decided to make a whole game about it, and now we have Skull and Bones.

But Black Flag is still worth trying today if it’s the kind of game you’re looking for. Many Assassin’s Creed fans still consider it one of the best in the series, and it definitely has the pirate vibe.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • Release date: 2018
  • Key features:
    • Deep RPG gameplay
    • Isometric
    • Lots of customisation and mechanics

This game is more complicated than Skull and Bones by a long shot, but if you’re after a meatier pirate title this could be worth a look. You’ll be setting sail to pursue a rogue god in this top-down RPG.

This is a game with deep RPG mechanics, so it might not be as suitable if you’re simply looking for a casual pirate game to play every once in a while. If you want a more complex game with different companions, quests, abilities and more, it might be up your street.

Return to Monkey Island

  • Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Mobile
  • Release date: 2022
  • Key features:
    • Plenty of puzzles
    • Point-and-click
    • Narrative-focused

This game won’t deliver the action-packed PvP content of games like Skull and Bones or Sea of Thieves, but it will deliver a quirky tale of pirate shenanigans.

It’s a point-and-click adventure, and brings back the classic series created by Ron Gilbert with a new visual style. For those of you looking for a fun pirate puzzler with a story to get stuck into, Return to Monkey Island is worth a go.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

  • Platforms: Gamecube, Wii U
  • Release date: 2018
  • Key features:
    • Sprawling seas to explore
    • Dungeons and boss fights
    • Sailing

Finally, this is a bit of a weird one, but Wind Waker is easily one of the most iconic nautical adventures in gaming. You might not be a pirate, but you’re setting sail for a journey across different islands, solving puzzles and finding treasure, so it still counts.

What this game excels at is the sense of adventure. Like most Zelda games, it’s an epic quest filled with boss fights and dungeons to explore, and it has an excellent soundtrack too. If sailing across a vast ocean to unexplored islands is your idea of a good time, Wind Waker might be the best game on this list.

The only issue is that it’s not on modern platforms, but it’s still worth digging out if you can.
