What Happens When You Restrict Someone on Facebook Messenger

Facebook offers a number of privacy-focused features to combat the growing spam on its platform. You can unfriend annoying contacts, restrict them from your profile, and even block contacts from contacting you via Messenger. Among all the security features, the ability to restrict someone is a neat add-on to protect your profile from spam calls and messages. But have you wondered what happens when you restrict someone on Facebook Messenger?

If you don’t want to completely block someone on Messenger, you can always restrict them and protect your profile from prying eyes. Here’s how you can restrict someone on Messenger and what it means.

How to restrict someone on Facebook Messenger

Before talking about limited functionality on Facebook Messenger, let us show you the steps to use it.

Note: Facebook uses an identical user interface on Messenger for iOS and Android. The steps to restrict someone on Messenger remain the same on both platforms. We’ll use the Messenger app for iOS as an example here.

Step 1: Open the Messenger app on your Android or iPhone.

Step 2: Select the conversation with the contact you want to restrict.

Step 3: Tap the contact name at the top.

Step 4: Select ‘Restrictions’ under Privacy and Support.

Messages and calls

When you restrict someone on Messenger, you won’t receive any notifications when that person sends a message. Your phone won’t even ring when the recipient calls you on Messenger.

You also can’t text or call that person. You must unlimit the person before sending the message (more on that later).

What about the previous message?

When you use limited functionality, Facebook will hide your current chat thread in the Messenger app. You also don’t see new messages in the default Chats tab. You have to search for the contact’s name at the top and open the chat to check all new and previous messages.

Facebook also doesn’t delete any past messages. The app hides them from the main tab. When you create a new chat group on Messenger, the app notifies you about restricted accounts on Facebook (if you try to add them to the group).

Can restricted people see my Facebook status

The ability to restrict someone is a privacy feature. You only limit the person’s reach to view your profile and other online activities. Restricted contacts won’t be visible when you’re online or if you’ve read their messages. You also won’t see them when they’re online.

Do recipients know when you’ve restricted them?

As we mentioned above, restriction is one of the privacy features on Facebook. The company doesn’t send any notifications when you restrict someone on Messenger.

I’m still friends with a restricted account

You continue to be friends with restricted accounts on Messenger. Facebook won’t automatically unfriend someone.

Restricted people can see all previous posts but can’t see any new Facebook posts.

How to check restricted accounts on Facebook

If you change your mind and want to unrestrict someone on Facebook, you can review the list of restricted accounts to make the necessary changes. Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1: Launch Messenger on your phone.

Step 2: Tap your profile picture in the top left corner.

Step 3: Select Privacy.

Step 4: Tap Restricted Accounts.

Step 5: Select the Facebook friend name you want to unblock.

Step 6: Confirm the same from the following menu.

Repeat the same for all contacts to unrestrict them on Facebook.

What is the difference between Block and Restrict on Messenger

Blocking someone makes you invisible to that person on Facebook. They can’t view your profile, send messages, initiate voice/video calls, check your online status, and unfriend you on the platform. Even after restricting someone, Facebook still doesn’t solve the spam problem, you can take the extreme step and block the recipient.

Like Facebook’s restriction, the platform doesn’t notify the person when you block them. To learn more, check out our separate guide to restricting Messenger versus blocking.

Mute vs Restricted on Messenger

Mute someone will mute all incoming messages and calls from that person on Messenger. You can still see the latest incoming messages in the main chat tab. At the same time, restricting someone completely hides the conversation.

Unlike restricted accounts, muted accounts can see your activity status and all future posts on Facebook and even add you to a group chat.

Restriction is a great balance between Mute and Block

Limited functionality on Messenger makes the best of the Mute and Block add-ons, and provides a great solution to keep your Facebook account spam-free. If you have any other questions regarding restricting someone on Facebook, let us know in the comments section below.
