Portable Apps Review: A Neat Suite of Tools For Your USB Pen Drive

A few weeks ago, I accidentally broke my laptop’s charging pin. When I went to the service center, I was told that it would take a few days to fix it. For almost 3 days my laptop was at the service center and I had to go to local network cafes to work online.

Quite frankly, the computers in these cafes are of no use. They don’t even install a few necessary applications on their system. It may surprise you but most of them still have IE 6 as default browser. Luckily, I was saved carrying a portable USB drive with Portable Apps pre-installed along with all my favorite portable apps installed on it. Using the Mobile App not only saves my time but also isolates my work and data from the host computer (in a way).

What is PortableApps.com?

PortableApps.com is the most popular and widely used portable software solution. It’s free, open source, and with it you can carry your favorite software suite in a portable USB drive or hard drive. Since apps are portable, you can use them directly from your flash drive, without any installation required.

Make your USB drive ready for portable applications

To get started, plug a suitable USB drive into your computer (no less than 2GB recommended), download the PortableApps.com platform installer, run it, and install it in the root directory of your drive.

After successful installation, run Start.exe from the root directory of the drive where you installed the Portable Applications. Its user interface will look like the Windows 7 start menu with all installed portable apps in the left column while folders like Documents, Music and Pictures will be in the right column. Initially, the left column will be empty due to the lack of mobile apps.

Points to remember

  • When you’re done, quit all portable apps, and then click the eject button in the PortableApps.com menu.
  • Always work on good quality USB flash drive with good data read/write speed to save time.
  • Make sure that the public computer you use is free of viruses or viruses that could corrupt all the data present on your device.
  • Always make a copy of removable media on your personal computer’s hard disk, this copy can be used as a backup at the time of USB failure.
