On iPhone and iPad, Apple Books (formerly iBooks) makes digital reading a pleasure. The refined user interface, automatic dark mode and adjustable background color will provide an extraordinary experience. However, there will come a time to clean up the store, especially when you have accumulated a lot of books.
Purchased books cannot be permanently deleted (even free gifts count as purchases). Thankfully, the Books app still lets you remove books (both downloads and book covers) from your iOS device pretty easily. And if you prefer alternative e-reader apps, you can also choose to remove the Books app itself.
Note:
Delete downloaded books
Deleting downloaded books from the Books app frees up space and is a pretty good idea when you really need the storage space. Despite that, deleted books will continue to show up (as placeholders) in the app. That means you can continue to manage your collections without missing a thing.
Step 1: Open the Books app, then find the book you want to remove from the Library. Normally, it helps filter your books from other categories — to do that, open the Collections menu, then tap Books.
Step 2: Tap the More icon (three dots) in the lower right corner of the book you want to delete. On the menu that appears, tap Delete.
Step 3: Tap the option labeled Delete Downloads.
That will prompt the app to remove the downloaded book from your iPhone or iPad. Since the book’s cover is still present in your Library and Now Reading sections, it only takes one tap to re-download the book.
Tip:
Hide/Unhide purchases
When it comes to removing book covers or preventing others from checking them, simply deleting downloaded books won’t work. A purchased item cannot be permanently discarded. However, the Books app lets you hide purchased items — that works too! Moreover, you can unhide it at any time.
Step 1: Tap the More icon below a book, then tap Delete.
Step 2: Click Hide book. This will prompt the Books app to delete both the downloaded book and the book cover.
Note:
Step 3: To show a hidden book, tap the profile icon on the Now Reading section.
Step 4: Tap Manage Hidden Purchases, then enter your Apple ID credentials to continue.
Step 5: Click on the AUSTRALIA next to a book and that book will immediately show up in the Library.
Note that you need to re-download the book after you unhide it — just tap the book’s cover to do so.
Delete PDF files
Apple Books also serves as a great PDF reader and annotation tool. You can directly save PDF files from web browsers and other applications to it. All items are then automatically synced to iCloud, which means you have access to them across devices.
For files that you want to delete, you can delete them and keep the placeholder covers in the app (similar to deleted book downloads). Since there are no purchases involved, the Books app also offers the ability to remove them permanently. You can download them again from iCloud later.
Step 1: Locate the PDF file you want to delete. To distinguish them from your books, filter them using the Word Collection menu in the Library.
Step 2: Click the More icon below the PDF file, then tap Delete.
Step 3: On the menu that you see, tap Delete Download to delete the PDF while leaving the placeholder cover, or tap Remove Anywhere to permanently delete the PDF from all your devices including including iCloud.
Warning:
Delete or hide multiple items
Obviously, having a large library means that getting or hiding individual books can be tedious and time consuming. Thankfully, you can delete multiple book downloads or hide them in one go.
Step 1: Start by tapping on the Edit option.
Step 2: Select the books you want to delete, then tap the Trash icon — on the menu that appears, choose the action you want to take.
The same method applies to deleting or deleting PDF files in bulk.
Remove or offload the book app
Although it is a native iOS app, it is also possible to remove the Books app. You have two ways to do that — by deleting or offloading the app. The former removes the Books app entirely, including any books and PDFs. However, the latter will delete the app but keep your data intact.
If you’re in a hurry to free up a lot of space or simply want to switch eBook readers, removing the Books app is a viable option. Offloading, on the other hand, works best if you want to temporarily remove the app—you’ll still have access to your books and PDFs whenever you reinstall the app, without having to download it again.
Step 1: On your iPhone or iPad’s Settings app, tap General, then tap iPhone/iPad Storage.
Step 2: In the list of applications that appear, select Books.
Step 3: Tap Remove App to remove the Books app including all locally downloaded books and PDFs, or use the Offload App option to remove the app while keeping your library intact.
To re-download the Books app later, search for it on the App Store. If you’ve offloaded the app, you can also tap the Books icon on your Home screen to download it again.
Bonus tip — Clear the bookstore
Do you want to prevent other users (part of iCloud Family Groups) from buying new books or cluttering your Library without your permission? Or do you find yourself wasting too much time messing around in the Book Store instead of actually reading your book? Why not use the Screen Time restrictions to remove the Book Store from the Books app? You will still have access to all your existing books, but the ability to view new books or make new purchases will be removed.
Note:
Step 1: On the Settings app, tap Screen Time, then tap Content and Privacy Limits.
Note:
Step 2: Tap Allowed Apps.
Step 3: Turn off the switch next to Books.
After limiting the Book Store, you will no longer see the Book Store tab in the Books app.
To enable the Book Store later, return to the Allowed Apps screen in Screen Time, then toggle the switch next to Books.
Book Management
So that’s how you deal with unwanted books and PDFs on the Books app. Understandably, some of you out there are looking for a way to delete purchased books permanently. But hiding books works as a good alternative, and there’s no doubt Apple is thinking the same way by implementing such a feature in the app.
